Upper and Lower Gastrointestinal Bleeding: A Retrospective Study on 10 Years Experiences in Southeastern Iran

Background: Gastrointestinal bleeding (GIB) is an emergency medical situation that very common, although often benign but can cause considerable morbidity and mortality health care costs. The aim of this study was to analyze the endoscopic evaluation upper GIB (UGIB) lower (LGIB) in Sistan Balouchestan, southeast Iran. Methods: Data from patients with a referral university-affiliated hospital Zahedan, Southeastern Iran during 10-year period, were obtained. A total 21884 reports adult patients’ endoscopy colonoscopy 2011 2020 who admitted Ali-Ibn-Abitaleb studied which 5862 related GIB. Incomplete files excluded. Information on age, sex, diagnosis 5053 analyzed compared using chi-square statistical test. Results: There 3310 men (65.6%) 1743 women (34.4%) mean (±SD) age 48.4 (±19.83) years. 3079 had UGIB (60.8%) 1974 LGIB (39.2%). Peptic ulcer (72.8% duodenal 27.2% gastric ulcer) seen as main reason for (29.7%) hemorrhoids (44.2%). Mallory–Weiss syndrome significantly common age<40 years old, incidence rate malignancy higher those aged>40 old than younger group (P<0.001). Conclusion: most etiological factor it more women. Gastroesophageal varices second UGIB. Hemorrhoids anal fissures observed colonoscopic findings LGIB. prevalences are increase age. It important physicians constantly update their information about spectrum diseases region changing over time provide accurate management timely.
